Aypoupen

Privacy Policy

Who we are

Aypoupen is a publication about Armenians and Armenia, written and filmed by Garo Kotchounian and Araz Tavitian Kotchounian in Nicosia, Cyprus. In this policy, “we” means the two of us. If you have a question about your data, or want to use any of the rights described below, write to [email protected].

When you write to us

If you use the contact form, we receive your name, your email address and your message, and we use them only to answer you. They are stored on our own server and are not shared with anyone else. We keep them for as long as the conversation needs them, and for no longer than two years after it ends. We rely on the fact that you asked us to reply.

When you subscribe to the newsletter

If you sign up for the newsletter, we keep your email address in order to send you the letter, and for nothing else. Before the first letter we send one email asking you to confirm the address, and every letter carries a way to unsubscribe. When you unsubscribe, we remove your address from the list. We rely on your consent, which you give when you sign up.

When you read the site

Every visit passes through Cloudflare, which protects the site and makes it faster, and through our own server, which keeps short technical logs, such as your device’s internet address, the time and the page requested, so that we can keep the site secure. Cloudflare may also set a small number of cookies that are strictly necessary for security. These do not need your consent, and we rely on our legitimate interest in keeping the site safe and working.

If you agree, we count visits with Google Analytics, so that we can see which pieces are read, how readers find them and, in broad terms, from which countries. If you agree separately, we use the Meta Pixel, so that we can show our films and pieces on Facebook and Instagram to people who have already visited the site. Both run through Cloudflare Zaraz, which sends the information from Cloudflare’s servers instead of loading Google’s and Meta’s code in your browser. Neither runs until you agree, and you can refuse either one without losing anything on the site.

The information sent includes the pages you visit, the site that sent you here, your device and browser, and an identifier stored in a cookie on your device. It does not include your name or your email address. Google and Meta handle it under their own policies, Google’s and Meta’s, and it may be transferred to the United States under the safeguards those companies use, including the EU-US Data Privacy Framework. We keep analytics data for no longer than fourteen months.

Films

Our films are embedded from YouTube in its privacy-enhanced mode, and nothing is loaded from YouTube until you press play. Once you do, YouTube’s own privacy policy applies to what you watch.

Cookies, and changing your mind

On your first visit, a banner asks which kinds of cookies you accept: analytics, advertising, both or neither. Your choice is stored in a cookie so that we do not ask again, and you can change it at any time with the Cookie settings link at the foot of every page. Analytics and advertising cookies last for up to two years, unless you clear them sooner.

Your rights

Under the General Data Protection Regulation you can ask to see the personal data we hold about you, to correct it, to delete it, to restrict or object to its use, and to receive a copy of it. Where we rely on your consent, you can withdraw it at any time, without affecting what happened before. Write to [email protected], and we will answer within one month. If you are not satisfied with our answer, you can complain to the Commissioner for Personal Data Protection in Cyprus, at dataprotection.gov.cy.

Changes to this policy

When anything here changes, we will update this page and the date on it.

The newsletter

A letter when a new piece goes up.

What we found, and what did not fit in the piece. No schedule, no filler.
